Vice-Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, Prof Dapo Asaju, has urged the Federal Government to increase the budget for fund education.

Asaju, in an interview with our correspondent, said the percentage of what government gave to education was ridiculous while they kept spending money on frivolities.

“The government is not serious. The percentage of what they give to education is ridiculous and they are spending money and changing cars. Education has collapsed. It is just that the burial ceremony has not yet been planned,” he said.

He maintained that there was the need to have adequate funding for education and education policy had to change in a way that would empower mass education.

“It is for us to have more budgets for the funding of education in a way that the money would not be defrauded by the educationists themselves because money can come from the government and the people will embezzle it themselves; it is a corporate problem. You must have the government believe in it, you must have adequate funding for education, education policy has to change in a way that will empower mass education, the same way Awolowo did at that time. You must be able to bear the cost of education and count the cost,” he said.

According to him, for Nigerian Universities to be repositioned for international visibility, there was the need for the government to believe in the importance of education.
